Arrest on tap in theft of Dexter property

DEXTER – Police recovered several items over the weekend that were taken earlier this month from municipal buildings at Crosby Park.

On Monday, the Dexter Police Department was preparing an arrest warrant for a local man suspected in the thefts. The man, who lives on Zion’s Hill, reportedly is out of state this week, according to Dexter Police Dispatcher Christine Pooler.

In a separate incident, a 13-year-old was taken into custody Monday for his alleged involvement in the vandalism to the 9th hole at the municipal golf course. Two other juveniles also are being investigated in connection with the damage, according to Pooler.

Pooler said Officer Darin Smith received some information over the weekend that helped solve the theft of items from the grandstand and the bus garage at Crosby Park. The items, some of which had been sold but have been recovered, included a disc grinder, a speed drill, a rivet gun, five pairs of work gloves, screwdrivers, an air hammer, wrenches, a bush cutter, a chain saw and a Dexter Tigers blanket. Some of the items were recovered at the Dexter man’s Zion’s Hill Road home, she said.

Town Manager Robert Simpson said the town would give the $500 reward to the person who gave police the information that led to the recovery of the items and the arrest. The $500 reward was donated by a local resident.

In addition, Simpson said the person who helped police solve the vandalism to the golf course will be provided with $500, although he is not sure where the funds will come from.

Simpson said he would fund the reward money, either through the municipal budget, from merchants or from his own pocket. “We’re going to continue the [reward] program – I think it’s the key to success for these cases,” he said.

The damage to the flagpole holders on downtown stores and the theft of the American flags they held are still under investigation. Police believe this incident is unrelated to the damage to the golf course and the theft of items from municipal buildings.

The town did receive a call Monday from Walter Lougee, the owner of the World of Flags in Milo, who offered to donate replacement American flags for the downtown. Simpson said it was a kind and generous offer, which was accepted.

In the meantime, Simpson hopes that someone will come forward with information about the flagpole damage and the theft of flags, even if means another $500 reward.
