LUBEC – The Lubec marina will be the starting point for the Passamaquoddy Yacht Club’s second annual Roosevelt Challenge Cup Race on Aug. 11.
John Gallagher, chairman of the race committee, said the course will be dependent on the wind and the tides, but the basic route will be between Lubec, Eastport and Campobello Island, New Brunswick.
The multi-class race is open to all members of a registered American or Canadian yacht club, Gallagher said.
Last year’s race attracted nine participants and the club is hoping for 10 to 25 yachts this year, he said.
The Passamaquoddy Yacht Club dates to 1930, Gallagher said.
Initially called the Campobello Yacht Club, the organization was formed by Gallagher’s father and H. Morton Marriman, he said.
The club became inactive after World War II and was reactivated in 1985 as the Lubec-Campobello Yacht Club.
The club’s name was subsequently changed to the Passamaquoddy Yacht Club.
Registered yacht club members who want to participate in the Aug. 11 race may register by writing the club at P.O. Box 272, Lubec 04652.
Gallagher said the race is organized on a handicap system so participants must register in advance.
Those who want to watch the race may see it from Lubec, Eastport or Friar’s Head in Campobello.
