PORTLAND – It was a bumpy three days for Casco Bay Lines, the ferry service for Portland and its offshore islands.
Ferries had three accidents on three successive days last week, including a vessel hitting bottom near Bailey Island and another drifting into the shore at Cliff Island.
In the other incident, a ferry lost power while backing away from the Portland terminal after a metal lobster trap that was probably dragged in on the ferry’s last trip got wrapped around its propeller. The ferry drifted into a neighboring wharf.
The accidents, which appear unrelated, involved two different vessels and three different captains operating in three different areas of the bay. The Coast Guard was notified about the mishaps and is investigating the grounding.
“We were very fortunate that there was no damage to either vessel and no injuries,” said Nicholas Mavodones, operations manager of the ferry service.
