A squad of East stars will try to post its second win in three years Friday night as the 12th edition of the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic is contested in Biddeford.
The East stars dropped a 6-0 decision to the West in 2000, thanks to a first-quarter touchdown run by Maine-bound South Portland star Matt DiBiase.
That returned bragging rights to the West after the East’s lone win in the series, an 18-7 victory in 1999.
The game will begin Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford.
The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl is an all-star football contest pitting teams from the East and West regions of the state against each other. Teams are composed of recently graduated high school seniors who were among the state’s best players last fall.
The game serves as a fund-raiser for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and players spend the pre-game week both practicing for the game and learning more about the mission of Shriners hospitals.
Last year, the West squad dominated the East on the ground, but DiBiase accounted for the game’s only score.
DiBiase racked up 214 yards on 34 carries and earn the West’s MVP award, while the East’s top rusher managed just 35 yards.
The East’s MVP in 2000 was Gardiner defensive back Vin Lavallee.
