AUBURN – Brian Hackett fired a seven-hitter and Jordan Heath scored the game’s only run on a bases loaded wild pitch with two outs in the eighth inning as Bangor nipped Auburn 1-0 to claim the Junior League Baseball state championship Wednesday night.
The title, coupled with Bangor’s 5-3 Senior League Baseball (ages 15-16) championship win over Saco Tuesday, is believed to mark the first time two Bangor teams have won state titles and advanced to regionals in the same year.
Bangor’s Junior stars will play in the Eastern Regional in Port Monmouth, N.J. starting Aug. 4.
Heath had followed a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt with a single only to have the potential winning run gunned down at the plate. Walks to Keith Clifford and Anthony Derosa loaded the bases and Heath scored when Brandon Elie uncorked a wild pitch on an 0-2 count to Ben Silver.
Heath and Auburn’s Kyle Giguere each had two singles.
Elie pitched a four-hitter in defeat.
