WOOLWICH – The Board of Selectmen will soon decide whether to hold a special town meeting and let residents vote on a proposal to impose a moratorium on new cellular phone towers.
The Planning Board on Monday voted to recommend that the board schedule the meeting to allow people to vote on a six-month moratorium while the town develops new regulations over communications towers.
Bill Wilson, a resident who asked the Planning Board to vote on the matter, said he was pleased with the action, but felt it was only half a victory.
One of three cellular towers now under construction in the town is being built across the street from Wilson’s home.
“This won’t stop what is going on now,” he said. “I was hoping for a retroactive moratorium that would put a halt to the construction that is going on now.”
Woolwich has no ordinance restricting the construction of towers as long as they are in the general purpose zone. That zone generally follows Route 1 through the town.
If selectmen approve the moratorium question, a special town meeting could be held as early as September, following a public hearing.
