WELLS – An early morning fire at a Wells motel on Wednesday claimed the life of a New York woman.
The woman, whose name has not been released, had been a guest at the Wells Moody Motel on Route 1, along with her husband, police said.
The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. Investigators said the fire may have started at one of the cabins behind the main motel, but were still trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
The motel guests were evacuated when the fire broke out, but the roof collapsed on the cabin where the couple was staying, fire officials said. The husband managed to escape before the roof caved in.
The rest of the guests at the motel were evacuated safely and were housed at a motel across the street for the rest of the night.
The motel’s owner, Michael Bolduc, had no comment.
