COA show an artistic mix of Maine realism

BAR HARBOR – Some of the finest realist painters have portrayed Maine, and the visions of seven contemporary artists are being showcased in “Varieties of Maine Realism” in the Ethel H. Blum Gallery at College of the Atlantic.

The show will open Sunday, Aug. 12, with a 5-7 p.m. reception.

“Varieties of Maine Realism” features Richard Estes, Lois Dodd, Yvonne Jaquette, Alan Magee, Ernest McMullen, Gretchen Dow Simpson and David Vickery – each of whom treats his or her subject matter with a unique style of realism.

Estes, who is best known for his images of cities around the world, contributed several Maine landscapes including a portrait of Mount Katahdin and a view from the top of Cadillac Mountain.

Three of the featured painters are neighbors in Cushing. Magee is known for his precise renderings of stones and his trompe l’oeil work, while Dodd is known as an “abstract realist.” Vickery is a 1989 graduate of College of the Atlantic, who has spent several weeks painting on Monhegan Island under an arts fellowship.

Simpson’s work is internationally known – she has completed more than 65 covers for the New Yorker magazine during the past 20 years and was commissioned to create a painting for an Absolut vodka advertisement in 1993. She has been working on Maine islands for many years and will also be contributing works portraying Monhegan.

Jaquette has gained acclaim through her aerial views of cities, factories and rural countryside, and will be showing her pastel interpretations of Belfast and Lincolnville.

McMullen is a founding faculty member at COA, where he has shown his transcendent landscapes several times.

The exhibition will run through Sept. 8. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 288-5015 for more information.
