SHERMAN – A Caribou man was injured Saturday morning when his motorcycle crashed into a ditch along Route 2 in Sherman.
Two hours later, two people were hurt in a two-vehicle accident on Route 1 in Littleton.
In Sherman, Louis McNeal, 54, of Caribou was traveling west on Route 2 about 10:30 a.m. on his 1987 Suzuki motorcycle when he came to a sudden fork in the road. He failed to negotiate a curve and his motorcycle slid sideways and over a rocky embankment.
McNeal suffered a broken leg in the crash. He was wearing a helmet, according to Maine State Police Trooper Darren Foster.
He was taken by the Patten ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital and later transferred to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle.
Foster said Route 2 at its intersection with Golden Ridge Road suddenly splits into the fork after drivers come over a small hill. He said McNeal’s unfamiliarity with the road contributed to the accident.
In Littleton, a man and woman were injured when their vehicles collided about 12:30 p.m.
Foster said Jenaro Cardona, 60, of Houlton was making a left turn from the northbound lane of Route 1 and pulled in front of a southbound 1995 Ford Aspire operated by Catheryn Black, 32, of Old Town.
Black’s car struck the rear of Cardona’s 1984 GMC pickup.
Cardona complained of ankle pain and Black complained of neck and back pain. Both were taken by the Houlton ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital.
Three passengers in Black’s car, Judy Jouvelakos, 46, of Old Town and Joshua Jouvelakos, 11, and Kaly Archer, 11/2, also were taken to the hospital for examination but did not require treatment, Foster said.
Archer was in an infant seat and all of the other people in both vehicles were wearing seat belts, Foster said.
Black’s Aspire was demolished and Cardona’s pickup had rear-end damage.
The Houlton Fire Department rescue team responded to the Littleton crash, but extrication of the victims was not required, Foster said.
