BALTIMORE – Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick expects to have shoulder surgery as soon as next week, sidelining him for the rest of the season.

He would be the third Orioles player to be lost for the season in the past two weeks.

The shortstop has been on the disabled list since June 14 because of a separated right shoulder. He said he developed the labrum tear during a rehabilitation assignment this past weekend.

Dr. James Andrews, an orthopedic specialist, would operate. The Orioles hope an examination by Andrews will rule out the need for surgery, but are not optimistic.

“The shoulder’s bothering him. We’ll have the doctors look at it. We’ll get the report then,” manager Mike Hargrove said.

Bordick underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test this week, said Syd Thrift, the Orioles vice president of baseball operations. Thrift said the tear is believed to be unrelated to the separation.

“I only want him back when he’s healthy,” Thrift said. “I’d rather miss him the rest of the season and be healthy next year.”
