Tax fraud nets man 27 more months in jail

BANGOR – Jason Stevens, 46, formerly of Canaan, was sentenced Friday to 27 months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for making a false claim to a $5,211 income tax refund on his 1997 personal federal income tax return.

The false claim was based on a fictitious W-2 form claiming he earned $10,920 from Maine Merchant Brokers, a business purportedly run by Stevens. Stevens was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $12,348.

Court records reveal that although Stevens claimed a tax refund based on a salary from MMB, it had never done any business. MMB had never filed corporate or partnership income tax returns, sole proprietorship schedules or made any payment to the Internal Revenue Service.

Stevens currently is serving a 116-month sentence for a 1997 federal firearms conviction. He will begin serving the 27-month sentence at the completion of his existing sentence.
