Windmill windfall

My heart goes out to all the men and women affected by the recent mill closings and other facilities as well. Maine seems to be particularly hard hit by this economic downturn.

This would seem an opportune time to revitalize the windmill project. Many of these workers could be retrained to build and maintain these environmentally friendly windmills. Note there are some about to be built off Cape Cod. The more diversification we can achieve in energy sources, the more stable our prices will be.

Nuclear facilities should be permanently vetoed as an alternative. Remember Maine Yankee? Who knew the life cycle of a nuclear plant was known to be only 25 to 30 years? The hazardous materials created were, and are, a nation’s worst nightmare.

Years ago a friend of mine married a man who had found a way to make automobile fuel from seawater while studying for his master’s degree. The oil companies quickly bought him out.

Monopolies control prices. Let us consider the alternatives. In addition to windmills, let us reconsider other possibilities as well. The Quoddy project was suggested. Put your thinking caps on and call your senators and representatives. Let us get our people working again, so we can proudly say, “Maine, the way life should be.”
