Shaw wins feature, Thayer garners title as three-race series wraps up

HERMON – Alex Shaw of Hermon won the final installment of a season-long, three-race series at Speedway 95 Saturday night by holding off hard charges from Greg Pung of Bar Harbor and Strictly Street points leader Mike Thayer of Hermon.

Shaw took the 50-lap Strictly Street feature race in a finish that went down to the wire. He took the lead on a lap 21 restart, but both Pung and Thayer kept challenging him before finishing second and third, respectively. Keith Pierce of Bradford and Royce McAlpine of Ellsworth were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Thayer won the series championship along with the cash prize and trophy that honor earns at the November awards banquet.

Speedway 95 suspends five

Five people involved in a fight during the races at Speedway 95 Wednesday night in Hermon have been banned from the track’s pit area for the remainder of the racing season, the track announced in a press release Sunday.

Fred Ashmore Jr. of Hancock, a Sport-Four Saturday night driver, Mike Witham of Milo, and Richard Burrill of Sullivan, both drivers in the Wednesday Little Enduro division, were notified of their suspensions Saturday night. Two other individuals, identified as only pit crew members for either Burrill or Witham, were also suspended.

What started as a verbal confrontation between Burrill and Witham following the Little Enduro feature Wednesday night escalated into a fight when pit crew members began swinging at drivers while they argued, the press release stated. Law enforcement officials arrived to find some pockets of fighting still going on, according to Deputy William “Chip” Briggs of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

When the police arrived, they found that Speedway 95 security had already done much to quell the fight as Briggs said many of the people had dispersed before police arrived with their sirens sounding and lights flashing.

Racing at Speedway 95 Saturday night went on without incident.

Beech Ridge Speedway

At Scarborough, Bobby Babb of Windham had to fight off four challengers all the way to the checkered flag, but never relinquished his slot at the head of the pack following lap 20 in the 40-lap Late Model Pro Series feature race Saturday night at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.
