You’re nipping at the wrong heels. Forget the Maine Christian Civic League (MCCL). Start chasing the King administration and Democrats in the Maine Legislature.

Had there been a public hearing on domestic partner health benefits there would almost certainly be no referendum drive. But the King administration – specifically, Finance Commissioner Janet Waldron and the State Employee Health Commission – approved the benefits without public comment.

The MCCL and others twice tried to gain a public hearing through the legislative process. Democrats turned this public policy issue into a political issue, twice shooting down the public hearing attempt.

The BDN is a longstanding champion of “public right to know” laws. The MCCL and others believe the public has a right to know about state health benefits for same-sex and unmarried partners before the policy is enacted.

Did the BDN support them in their initial fight for a public hearing? Did you editorialize against the administration and Democrats who said to hell with the public?s right to know on this issue? How do you explain your double standard?
