Members of the Acadia Area ATVers, who hail from the Hancock County area, hope all ATV riders and dirt-bikers will join them for their fourth annual charity ride to raise funds for the KISS 94.5 Christmas is for Kids campaign.
Dawn Edgecomb of Mariaville reported the two-day event is Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9, and leaves each day from the Airline Snack Bar on Route 9 in Beddington.
The Saturday riders “leave at 9 a.m. sharp,” and riders will travel along “a surprise route,” Edgecomb said.
Participants are requested to bring their own lunches.
However, there is a camping area and rooms are available at the Airline Snack Bar for those wishing to stay overnight and participate both days, she said.
Reservations for a space or a room must be made with the Airline Snack Bar. The telephone number is 638-2301.
The main ride is Sunday. It begins with a buffet breakfast at 7 a.m. at the snack bar. The cost of the breakfast is $5 per person.
But don’t bring lunch this time.
“Halfway through the ride, a barbecue will be provided, and that is free to everyone,” Edgecomb said.
Throughout the event, 50-50 tickets will be on sale for $1 each, or seven for $5.
All donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit Christmas is for Kids.
“Last year we raised $3,800 for people in need,” Edgecomb said.
She recalled how moved she was by some of the requests for help at Christmas, particularly remembering “one little boy who wrote that all he wanted was boots and a coat so he could go outside and play with his brother.”
Edgecomb is hoping people “will just show up,” and join the ride to help this organization help others during the holidays.

I recently received a call from Joe Riitano of Sangerville, who told me the SAD 4 Sports Boosters Club is sponsoring a raffle to raise funds to make improvements at the softball field used by the girls who play ball in the district.
The raffle offers 18 items, ranging from 100 gallons of heating oil from Webber Oil Co. to a limited-edition decorative sled from Moosehead Manufacturing.
Other gifts include firewood, savings bonds, greens fees and gift certificates.
The tickets are $1 each, and are available at stores in Abbot, Guilford, Parkman and Sangerville.
Proceeds from the raffle will be used to fix the infield, outfield and dugouts, as well as adding a backstop and installing an outside fence at the softball field.
The drawing for the raffle prizes will take place during Piscataquis Community High School Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Guilford.
Grandparents Day is Sunday, Sept. 9.
The Parenting Coalition and Generations United, two nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C., are sponsoring the Something to Remember Me By Legacy Project.
The goal of the project is to help parents, grandparents and children build closer relationships, and includes a free Grandparents Day activity kit and an intergenerational contest.
The Grandparents Day activity kit – for families, schools and community groups – suggests dozens of activities to celebrate the day and encourage interaction between generations.
The grand prize in the Intergenerational Contest is a Lane cedar chest with an IBM NetVista computer inside.
The 10 runner-up prizes are a $75 gift certificate from the Chinaberry book catalog.
Children ages 10-18 can enter the contest with their grandparent or other adult mentor who is age 50 or over.
Each intergenerational team works together on an original, creative essay of 300 words or less on the topic “Linking Past & Future.”
The project was inspired by the book “Something to Remember Me By,” written by intergenerational researcher and author Susan Bosak, who is national chairwoman of the project.
The free Grandparents Day activity kit, all contest details, and the entry form are available by calling (800) 777-7765 or at www.somethingtoremembermeby.org.
The contest begins Saturday, Sept. 1, and final entries must be postmarked by Friday, Oct. 26.
