WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Ben Shorey of Ellsworth was among the racewalkers who helped the U.S. squad defeat Canada in a match competition held in conjunction with the Sallie Mae 10K/USA Senior 10K Championship Racewalk on Sunday.

Shorey, who will attend the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the fall, finished third in the race and was the first junior (under age 20) walker. Shorey posted a time of 45 minutes, 42 seconds over the 6.2-mile distance as the U.S. men’s team prevailed 16-5.

Other Maine finishers were Adam Staier, who will be a senior at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington (10th in 48:58), and Jonathan Chasse of Maranacook High in Readfield (53:22).

In the women’s competition, the U.S. won 16-6 behind the winning effort of Robyn Stevens of Vacaville, Calif. Stevens finished in 52:04.

Maine finishers included Anne Favolise of Columbia (7th in 54:38), and Amanda Bergeron of Poland (58:37).
