Maine Forest Service warns of fire danger

AUGUSTA – With the potential for forest fires increasing daily, Maine Forest Service officials are again urging the public to be very careful with all out of doors fires.

Friday’s dry air and gusting wind, coupled with already dry vegetation, prompted the call for caution.

Forest rangers responded to 16 escaped campfires over the past week and a half. Many fires burned deep into the ground and then resurfaced. In order to avoid resurfacing, forestry officials recommend that campfires be built only on mineral soil and never on ground litter.

Fires should be doused with water, stirred, and doused again. Coals should be checked to make sure they are cold, and open fires should never be left unattended.

Conditions this weekend are expected to remain dry, and anyone planning a camping trip into Maine’s forests should contact the Forest Service at 1-800-750-9777.
