Portland weekly makes debut

PORTLAND – The Current, a weekly newspaper serving Portland’s southern suburbs, will be launched Sept. 13, with separate editions for Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth.

The paper will be mailed to 12,000 homes in the two towns for the first four weeks and will then be available through paid subscription, said Lee Hews Casler, a former manager at the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram, who is founding The Current.

Also next month, The Forecaster, a free weekly newspaper that covers Portland’s northern suburbs, will introduce a southern edition covering news in South Portland, Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth.

South Portland currently gets coverage from two weekly newspapers, the South Portland Sentry and the American Journal.

The Scarborough Leader, also a weekly, covers Scarborough. The Cape Courier, in Cape Elizabeth, is published twice a month.

The area receives daily coverage in the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. A free, tabloid-sized daily, the Portland Morning Sun, recently announced that it will soon begin publication.
