CALAIS – Bonny Burns and Mona VanWart have been named co-chairs of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on Oct. 7.

The walk will take place in 12 communities in Maine. In Calais, it will be held at the Calais Regional Hospital.

Nationally, breast cancer will strike nearly 200,000 times this year and claim more than 40,000 lives. In Maine, more than 1,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive 3- to 5-mile walk conceived in 1993 to heighten awareness of this health problem.

Money raised during Making Strides supports the American Cancer Society’s programs in breast cancer research, education and patient services. Individuals and teams from local area businesses, schools and other organizations will help raise the funds.

Last year, more than 335,000 walkers across the country raised more than $26 million for the cause. “There is strength in numbers,” Burns said. “By participating in this fun walk, we send a powerful message of solidarity to the community.”

VanWart added, “We inspire fellowship and hope to all those touched by breast cancer.”
