Nason powers Stearns past Bangor 3-0

BANGOR – Katie Nason scored two second-half goals to power the Stearns Minutemen to 3-0 season-opening victory over the Bangor Rams in high school field hockey action Friday.

Nason scored on a Holly Frank assist early in the half, snapping a scoreless tie, then scored unassisted late in the game. Jessica Osborne scored the other goal on a Meg Dye assist.

Becca Saucier made 12 saves on 12 shots.

Allison Frazier and Frankee Waldron combined to register 28 saves on 31 shots for Bangor, with Frazier making 26 stops.

JV: 0-0 tie

Foxcroft 2, John Bapst 0

At Bangor, Ashley McKusick and Emily Austin scored goals as the Ponies beat the Crusaders in the season opener for both teams.

McKusick goal was unassisted while Austin scored on a penalty stroke for Foxcroft Academy. Megan Ryder stopped all six shots she faced.

Julia Sleeper made eight saves on nine shots for John Bapst.

JV: Foxcroft 7-1

Girls soccer

Lee 2, Katahdin 1

At Sherman Station, Deidra Ham’s two goals were the difference as the Pandas edged the Cougars.

Ham’s second goal came with 24 minutes remaining in the match and broke a 1-1 tie. Shelby Pickering picked up an assist on Ham’s first goal and Katie Harris made seven saves on 16 shots for 2-0 Lee.

Krystal McMoran scored off a Scarlett McAvoy assist for 0-1-1 Katahdin and Mindy Libby stopped nine of 11 shots.

Boys soccer

Houlton 2, Schenck 0

At Houlton, second-half goals from David Carmichael and Lars O’Connell led the Shiretowners past the Wolverines.

James Skehan stopped 13 of 13 shots for 2-5 Houlton.

Mike Rossignol made 13 saves on 15 shots for 0-1 Schenck of East Millinocket.

Lee 8, Katahdin 0

At Lee, Frank Severance scored two goals and assisted on three others as the Pandas rolled by the Cougars.

Frankie Carpenter had a goal and an assist and Blair Emery, Nate Dow, Jason Mallett and Dustin Pickering also scored goals for 2-0 Lee. Adam Ham saved four shots.

Chris McNally saved 10 of 22 shots for 0-2 Katahdin.

Penquis 3, PVHS 2

At Milo, Penquis recovered from a 2-0 halftime deficit with goals from Peter Bissel, Steve Kissell, and Ben Knapp.

Knapp and Justin Allen assisted with Bissel and Kissell’s goals, respectively, for the Patriots.

Jered Michaud scored on a penalty kick for Penobscot Valley of Howland. Keith Champion added the Howlers’ second goal.

Mike Grindle stopped eight of 12 shots for 1-0 Penquis. Lance Pelkey stopped 12 of 18 shots for 0-1 PVHS.

Central 1, Dexter 0

At Corinth, a strong performance by Central goalie Adam Allen kept the Red Devils in position for the victory.

Allen stopped 17 of 19 shots for the shutout.

Joe Allen scored the game-winning goal midway through the second half on a 25-yard kick. Blake Goodwin assisted on the goal for 1-0 Central.

Chris Sinclair stopped seven of 19 shots for the 0-1 Tigers.

George Stevens 3, Searsport 2

At Searsport, a goal by Hans Reuter sealed the win for the Eagles in their inaugural game.

Mark Clapp scored two early goals to put George Stevens in position for the win.

Pasco Grove scored a goal on a penalty shot and added an assist on Kurt Lockhart’s score for the Vikings.

James Friend stopped five of 12 shots for 1-0 George Stevens. Jacob Manner blocked five of 15 shots for 0-1 Searsport.

DI-Stonington 4, BC Pats 2

At Deer Isle, Josh Bolton scored twice as the Mariners won the season opener for both teams.

Nick Ciomei and Evan Haskell added a goal and an assist apiece for Deer Isle-Stonington. Chris Gross made 10 saves on 14 shots.

Kyle Bradford and Ben Sobey scored the Bangor Christian goals and Pat McCleary stopped eight of 19 shots.

Belfast 2, MCI 2 (2OT)

At Belfast, Matt Olson of Belfast scored with 17:12 remaining in the first half to tie the game and conclude the scoring.

Mike Nayock tallied twice in a two-minute span for Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield. Ryan Small and Trafton Holmes each had an assist. Shawn Basford turned back 11 of the 21 shots he faced for the 0-0-1 Huskies.

JV: Belfast 2-0

Hermon 5, Old Town 4

At Hermon, Brandon Robinson’s three goals and two assists led the Hawks over the Indians.

Joey Schacht notched the game-winning goal when he put the Hawks up 5-3 just into the second half. Schacht also notched an assist. Ben Hagerty scored a goal for Hermon and Josiah Curtis added an assist.

Kevin Emerson scored three goals for the Indians. Matt Petrie added a goal and two assists. Tyson O’Keefe and Shawn Kenniston both notched assists for Old Town.

Matt Watson stopped seven of 12 shots for 1-0 Hermon. Tyler Tracewski blocked five of 15 shots for 0-1 Old Town.

JV: Old Town 3-2 (2OT)

John Bapst 2, Orono 0

At Orono, Zev Myerowitz scored five minutes into the second half to break a scoreless tie and send the Crusaders past the Red Riots in both teams’ season opener.

Bryan Snyder assisted on Myerowitz’s goal and Zachary Means scored an unassisted goal for John Bapst. Billy Chapman stopped all 10 Orono shots.

Mike Merritt and Evan James made 10 saves on 12 shots for Orono.

JV: John Bapst 4-0

Sumner 4, Narraguagus 1

At East Sullivan, Alex Brunton’s three goals led the Sumner Tigers past the Knights of Harrington in their opener.

Kyle Joy scored the first goal for Sumner and Trevor Reynolds notched an assist.
