ORONO – Maine and Central Connecticut State battled to a 0-0 double overtime stalemate Sunday in the final game of the Black Bear Invitational in women’s soccer action.

Naomi Welsh made two saves on four shots for 1-0-1 Maine. For 0-1-1 Central Connecticut, Sabrina Mariani turned away seven of 11 shots.

On Saturday, three Maine players netted goals to propel the team to a 3-0 season-opening victory over Manhattan College.

Sophomores Annie Hamel, Jen Buckley and Katie Hodge recorded the goals. Angie LeBlanc assisted Buckley. Welsh made one save on five shots.

For 0-1-0 Manhattan College, Jeanne Gilbert stopped five of 12 Maine shots.

In Saturday’s other tournament game, Lafayette College knocked off Central Connecticut 2-1.

Men’s soccer

Rhode Island 5, Maine O

At Kingston, R.I., four different players scored goals as 16th-ranked Rhode Island stormed to a 5-0 season-opening victory over Maine Saturday in the URI/Wakefield Mall Classic.

The Rams outshot the Black Bears 26-1, with Dennis Richards, Gareth Elliott, Reuben Ray and Sasha Gotsmanov finding the back of the net. Rhode Island received another score when a Maine defender deflected the ball into the goal. Patrick Rooney, Nicholas McCreath and Perek Bellah were credited with assists.

Goalies Michael Charles and Kent Harkness combined for the shutout.

For Maine, Matt Cosgriff turned away eight of 26 shots.

In other tournament action Saturday, Quinnipiac defeated Siena 3-0.

Field hockey

Maine 3, Colgate 1

At Morse Field in Orono, junior forward Karly Bundy of Kennebunk led the Black Bears to victory with two goals Sunday against the Raiders.

Sophomore Karyn Magno scored Maine’s second goal of the game. Bundy’s second score was assisted by Morgan Brady and Kim Leo of Skowhegan. Kath Shelley scored Colgate’s only goal on a Lauren DiCioccio assist.

Black Bear goalie Jaye Lance saved one of two shots for 1-1 Maine. Sara Corcoran stopped 13 of 23 shots for 1-2 Colgate.

Volleyball

EWU defeats UMaine

At Orono, the Eastern Washington University volleyball team rolled to a 30-18, 30-14, 30-13 victory over Maine Saturday in the Sea-Sun Opener Invitational, improving its mark to 3-0 and capturing the tournament championship.

The Black Bears, 1-2, finished third in the tournament. Boston College (2-1) and Army (0-3) were third and fourth.

For Eastern Washington, Lindsay Crandall recorded 13 digs against only two attack errors. Tournament MVP Janelle Ruen had 11 kills and 15 digs while Courtney Bush chipped in with eight kills and 10 assists.

Leah Voss, an all-tournament selection, paced the Black Bears with seven kills and 10 digs. Adrienne Poplawski registered seven kills and Carmen Gabriel added 12 digs.

Also on Saturday, Boston College downed Army 30-21, 30-20, 30-23.

On Friday, Maine earned its first win of the season with a 30-24, 30-22, 30-25 triumph over Army.

Voss led the Black Bears with a match-high 16 kills, 10 digs and a .382 hitting percentage.
