Authorities in Penobscot and Cumberland counties said Sunday they are investigating a report that a woman was forcibly driven from South Portland 125 miles north to Exeter, where she was able to break free from a male captor and call deputies.

Deputy Tom Burgess of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said the woman reported that she left a South Portland bar about 10:30 p.m. Friday and got into a car with a man who told her he would take her home. Friends had told the woman the man was “OK to ride with,” Burgess said.

Instead of taking the woman to her home in South Portland, the man allegedly drove her 125 miles north, the deputy said. “She rolled out of a moving car and ran to a house, from the story she gave me,” Burgess said Sunday night. About 4:40 a.m. Saturday, the woman called the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.

He said the report is being investigated as a kidnapping.

Lt. Amy Berry of the South Portland Police Department said Sunday the woman has returned home and that she has spoken to a South Portland police detective.

No arrests have been made. The woman described the man as Caucasian with dark hair.

The case has been turned over to South Portland police Detective Eric Jesseman.

A Bangor woman who twice tore a telephone cord out of the wall while her roommate tried to dial 911 was arrested early Sunday and charged with domestic assault and with obstructing the report of a crime. Michelle Freeman, 24, was released on bail and ordered to appear Oct. 1 in 3rd District Court in Bangor.

According to a police report, the roommate called police following a 3:30 a.m. fight that allegedly escalated into violence. Patrolmen Rob Angelo, Chad Foley and George Spencer arrived at the home and reported hearing screaming coming from inside.

They said Freeman was arguing with her roommate. They reported that Freeman apparently had become angered to find the roommate’s 6-year-old son at their home when she returned after the child had been taken to a friend’s house for the night.

She was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, where she stayed a few hours before being released on bail Sunday morning.
