CASTINE – Wels Baker’s goal with 12 minutes remaining in the match helped give the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners a 3-1 men’s soccer victory over the University of Maine-Machias Clippers Tuesday night in the mutual opener.
Derek Wilding and Jack Gilmore recorded assists on the goal. Gilmore had put Maine Maritime ahead in the 65th minute of the match off a free kick that he deflected off a defender.
Tateda Chirusa’s goal in the 73rd minute tied the match for UMaine-Machias.
Dan Loebel made six saves on 13 shots for the Mariners while Andrew Swift stopped three of the 12 shots he faced for the Clippers.
Women’s soccer
USM 2, Framingham St. 1
At Gorham, junior forward Erin Garland’s goal with 11 minutes remaining in the match gave the University of Southern Maine a 2-1 win over Framingham State.
Camden-native Abbie Leonard picked up an assist on the game winner. Molly Tanguay had given the Huskies the lead in the 70th minute of the match when she scored off an assist from Madawaska’s Jenny Boucher.
But Framingham State tied the match just three minutes later when Southern Maine scored on their goal.
Marcy Ansley made three saves on seven shots while Kristina Kern saved four of 11 shots for the 0-2 Rams.
