BIG SCHOOL (Classes A-B)

BOYS

Steven DeWitt, a senior from Ellsworth, won the 2.96-mile Ellsworth Invitational cross country meet with a time only 15 seconds off course record (14:02) set by him last year, in his first high school event since suffering a knee tendon injury (during basketball season) that forced him to miss the 2001 spring track season.

GIRLS

Oriana Farley, a Hampden Academy junior who had finished second in the Ellsworth Invitational last year and third as a freshman, won the 2.96-mile race in 17 minutes, 43 seconds – 17 seconds better than her closest competitor.

SMALL SCHOOL (Classes C-D)

BOYS

Ben Briggs, an Orono High senior, scored a touchdown on a 31-yard run and finished with 115 yards on 18 carries as the Red Riots earned a 12-9 season-opening victory over Old Town.

GIRLS

Sarah and Lindsay Turner, twin sisters and juniors at Dexter, combined for seven goals and seven assists in the Tigers’ 8-0 win against Central of Corinth. Sarah Turner scored four goals and added two assists, while Lindsay Turner had three goals and five assists.
