Long streaks halted Bangor wins, Winslow loses

The Bangor Rams and Winslow Black Raiders were on opposite ends of the high school field hockey spectrum Thursday as their respective losing and winning streaks were finally broken.

Bangor won its first game in almost four years, scoring a 3-0 victory over Orono. Meanwhile, perennial Class B contender Belfast ended Winslow’s winning streak at 19 games, beating the Raiders 3-2 in double overtime at Belfast.

Bangor 3, Orono 0

At Orono, goalie Allison Frazier made eight saves on eight shots to help Bangor shut out Orono.

It was the Rams’ first victory since they beat Brewer 2-0 in their regular-season finale on Oct. 16, 1997. Prior to Thursday’s victory, Bangor had gone 0-42-2 since the end of the ’97 season.

Sara Boyorak, Ashley Emerson and Ashley Leen each scored an unassisted goal for the 1-1 Rams of coach Lisa Conley.

Ana Blagojevic made five saves on eight shots for the 0-1 Red Riots.

Belfast 3, Winslow 2 (20T)

At Belfast, Ann Berry banged home the game-winner from inside the circle off a breakaway assist from Ashley Bryant with 4:35 remaining in the second overtime as the Lions snapped Winslow’s long winning streak.

Last year, the state champion Black Raiders were undefeated and unscored upon. Winslow entered the game with a sparkling 54-2 record since the end of the ’97 season.

Berry also assisted on a goal from Sarah Skinner. Jen Jackson scored off an assist from Katie Gall. Tash Scott made seven saves on nine shots.

For 1-1 Winslow, Kristen Roy scored the equalizer with 12:23 left in regulation. Katie Flaherty also scored. Cierra Byrne made eight saves on 11 shots.

JV: Winslow 2-0

Dexter 6, Nokomis 0

At Dexter, Melissa Doody banged home three goals as the Tigers rolled past Nokomis of Newport.

Erika Hiko and Kristy Veazie each had a goal and two assists for 2-0 Dexter. Meagan Fogarty scored once. Cindy Koscielny stopped all seven shots she faced.

Brandi Davis made 14 saves on 23 shots for the Warriors.

JV: Dexter 2-0

Camden Hills 2, Waterville 0

At Camden, Linda Nyugden and Robin Dishner provided all the offense as the ‘Jammers blanked the Purple Panthers.

Carrie Winchenbach and Molly Grove added assists for the winners, who improve to 1-1. Becky McCrohan 12 shots.

Lindsey Brooker turned away six of eight shots for 1-2 Waterville.

JV: Waterville 5-0

MCI 3, Maranacook 0

At Pittsfield, Heidi Andrews knocked in two goals as the Huskies blanked the Black Bears of Readfield.

Liz Quint scored one goal while Kerri George and Autumn Hendricks added an assist each for 2-0 Maine Central Institute. Amanda Quint stopped all 10 shots she faced.

Morgan Verrill made five saves on seven shots for 0-1 Maranacook.

JV: MCI 1-0

Central 4, Brewer 0

At Brewer, Renee Trafton tallied two goals as the Red Devils of Corinth knocked off the Witches.

Jody Harvey and Casey Davis also scored for 2-0 Central. Cindy Dehm posted a shutout. Hilary Ohmart was the netminder for 0-1 Brewer.

JV: Central 10-0

Boys soccer

Lawrence 5, Leavitt 0

At Fairfield, John Pratt tallied two goals and was credited with a third when the Hornets of Turner scored on their own net as the Bulldogs rolled.

Kevin Hageman and Marshall Holmes added a goal each for 3-0 Lawrence. Nate Lobitz made 10 saves on 14 shots.

Jason McCarthy stopped six of 16 shots for the 1-2 Hornets.

JV: Lawrence 10-0

Greenville 9, Averill 0

At Hinckley, Richard Folsom blasted in two goals and Rory Owens added a goal and two assists as the 2-0 Lakers rolled.

Jonathan Ethier, David Whitman, Tyler Muzzy, and Jordan Belmont also scored for Greenville. Aaron Crossman scored on a penalty kick and made one save on two shots.

Josh Tedesco made 12 saves on 34 shots for the 0-1 Beavers.

Dexter 3, Searsport 0

At Searsport, Jeremy Kenney’s two goals provided all the scoring the Tigers would need as they blanked the Vikings.

Mitch Sawyer also scored for Dexter. Brian Hersey made seven saves on 18 shots.

Jacob Manner turned away 10 of 20 shots for Searsport.

Orono 3, Foxcroft 2

At Orono, Miles Kirby’s two goals were just enough as the Red Riots edged the Ponies.

Aloysha Klose also put one in the back of the net for 1-2 Orono. Mike Merritt stopped five of seven shots.

Dan Lubas and Manuel Blanc scored for 0-2 Foxcroft. Matt Hackett made five saves on eight shots.

Hermon 2, Bucksport 0

At Hermon, Brandon Robinson scored off an assist from David Moors as the 2-1 Hawks prevailed.

Reid Frye scored the other goal for Hermon. Matt Watson and Jon Kenerson combined on the shutout, making two saves.

Trevor Stevens made three saves on 14 shots for the 0-3 Golden Bucks.

JV: Hermon 6-1

Ellsworth 5, Sumner 0

At East Sullivan, Seth Mayo blasted in a pair of goals to lead the Eagles to the easy win.

John Hunnewell, Tim Spivey and Eric Mayo also scored for 3-0 Ellsworth. Chad Smith posted the shutout, stopping nine of 15 shots.

Jason Guest made 13 saves on 23 shots for the 2-1 Tigers.

GSA 1, DI-Stonington 0

At Blue Hill, Brent Warren provided the game’s only goal as the 2-1 Eagles edged the Mariners.

James Friend stopped all four shots he faced for the winners. Chris Gross turned away five of seven for 1-2 Deer Isle-Stonington.

John Bapst 4, Brewer 1

At Bangor, Zach Means banged home two goals and added an assist as the 3-0 Crusaders downed the 1-2 Witches.

Alex Means and Zev Myerowitz also scored for the winners. Billy Chapman stopped seven of nine shots.

John Rohn scored Brewer’s only goal. Mike King turned away 12 of 23 shots.

JV: Brewer 1-0

Lee 3, Penobscot Valley 3 (2OT)

At Lee, Frank Severance scored on an Opie MacDonald assist with 3:47 left in regulation, helping the Pandas earn a tie against the Howlers.
