Orono to discuss comprehensive plan

ORONO – A unique time-telling device and a site plan for Ayers Island will be highlights of meetings in the coming week.

The Town Council on Monday will hear about Boy Scout Nathan Kellogg’s proposed Eagle project during its 7 p.m. meeting at the municipal building.

Town Manager Gerry Kempen said Friday that Kellogg plans to construct a “human sundial,” to be located somewhere near the center of town.

The sundial would allow pedestrians to tell the time by standing on it and casting a shadow.

In other business, the council will continue public hearings from last month on amendments to town ordinances and the comprehensive plan, and on a zone change request for a parcel at Kelley Road and Stillwater Avenue.

On Tuesday, the Ayers Island Task Force will meet at 7 p.m. at the municipal building.

Chairman Nick Houtman said Friday that the agenda would include a presentation on a site plan for the 62-acre property in the Penobscot River by Sebago Technics.

Also discussed will be marketing plans by the Portland firm of Pierce Atwood.

In addition, the task force will continue discussing zoning standards for the island, the site of the former Striar Textile Mill.

The property is under lease to SciCloids LLC, a company headed by George Markowsky, who proposes to redevelop the site as a high-tech research and manufacturing facility.

Task force meetings have been well-attended by Orono residents, many of whom have asked the town to ensure that any development does not change the character of the neighborhood.
