PORTLAND – A Buxton man pointed a handgun at a moving van and fired once at the ground before speeding away in what police allege is an episode of road rage.
Roger Cunningham, 32, turned himself in at the Portland Police Department later Friday morning. He was charged with one count of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and one count of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, according to Deputy Police Chief Tim Burton.
No one was injured in the incident.
“There were several bystanders, including several children who were on their way to school at the time,” Burton said. “Needless to say, the possible outcome could have been very tragic.”
According to police, Friday’s incident began when a North American moving van pulled out of the Shop ‘n Save Plaza in Westbrook onto Brighton Avenue. Cunningham was behind the van in his 1990 GMC pickup truck.
“Both drivers maneuvered their vehicles in a confrontational manner, cutting each other off,” Burton said.
It wasn’t clear who initiated the confrontation.
The drivers exchanged expletives and gestures as they traveled toward the intersection of Brighton Avenue and St. John Street.
The moving van pulled into the parking lot of Corsetti’s convenience store and stopped. Cunningham followed and parked in front of it.
Cunningham allegedly pointed a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun at the van, then fired a shot at the pavement.
The people in the van recorded Cunningham’s license plates and police began searching for him.
Burton said the van’s driver does not face charges.
“Whatever the conduct was, it certainly should not have led to this type of conduct by Mr. Cunningham,” he said.
Cunningham was released from Cumberland County Jail on $540 cash bail by midafternoon.
