Woman dies after jump from Bucksport bridge

BUCKSPORT – A Holden woman leaped to her death Saturday night from the Waldo-Hancock Bridge, after a passer-by asked if she needed help.

Waldo County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Curtis identified the woman as Traci Nash, 30, who jumped from the bridge just after 9:30 p.m.

A passing motorist noticed the woman standing alone on the bridge and asked if she needed help, Coast Guard Petty Officer Leslieann Dykes of Southwest Harbor said Sunday.

The woman said no, then jumped head first off the bridge, Dykes said.

The body was retrieved from the water just before 11 p.m. by a state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife boat that was in the vicinity, Maine Marine Patrol Sgt. John Williams said Sunday.

In June 2000, a 34-year-old Bucksport woman died after jumping off the same bridge.

Curtis, who investigated the suicide, said Nash did not leave behind a note. He ruled the case a suicide after talking with the victim’s mother.

Bucksport Fire and Rescue, the Marine Patrol, and U.S. Coast Guard also responded to the scene.
