Palmyra man, 19, charged in chase

BANGOR – A high-speed chase that began on Interstate 95 with state police ended when the car eluding police ran off the Odlin Road in Bangor on Tuesday afternoon.

Michael J. Cole, 19, of Palmyra faces charges of eluding a police officer, driving to endanger and speeding after a 5- to 6-mile chase where speeds reached 100 mph, according to police. State police were alerted to a speeding car, a 1991 Red Eagle Talon, and Trooper Scott Hamilton said he was stopped in the turn around south of the Coldbrook Road when Cole sped past him, at 92 mph.

Hamilton followed Cole as the sports car turned off Exit 44 and then onto the Odlin Road. Cole lost control of the car after turning on a sharp curve. Skid marks can be seen leading to the lawn and Hamilton said that the car spun sideways before reaching the grass. The car then rolled toward the pavement and Cole jumped out, trying to run from police.

He didn’t get very far and was placed in handcuffs as a trooper searched the car.

Hamilton said that he was investigating whether Cole was involved in a theft of gasoline from a Clinton store that was reported.
