Defense, Sawyer goal gives Dexter win over Pirates

GUILFORD – Mitchell Sawyer provided the game’s only ounce of offense as the Dexter Tigers prevailed over Piscataquis 1-0 in soccer Wednesday.

Brian Hersey stopped 10 of 25 shots for Dexter.

Brandon Jones turned away 13 of 22 for 1-2-1 Piscataquis.

JV: PCHS 4-0

Lincoln Acad. 2, MCI 1 (OT)

At Pittsfield, Kyle Peterman scored on an assist from Josh Farrar with 11/2 minutes left in overtime, lifting the Eagles to victory.

Farrar’s second-half goal, assisted by Ben Maynard, tied the game for 3-1 Lincoln Academy of Newcastle. Greg Bernard made three saves on five shots.

John DeRosby scored on a breakaway for 1-2-1 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield. Shawn Basford racked up 17 saves on 25 shots.

JV: Lincoln Academy 1-0.

Lee 3, Schenck 0

At Lee, Dustin Pickering blasted home two goals as the Pandas blanked the Wolverines of East Millinocket.

Blair Emery added a goal and an assist for 4-1-1 Lee Academy. Adam Ham stopped eight of 10 shots.

Mike Rossignol turned away 15 of 25 shots for 4-2 Schenck.

John Bapst 5, Old Town 1

At Old Town, Zach Means scored three goals to lead the Crusaders past the Indians.

Brian Snyder had a goal and two assists while Alex Means had a goal and an assist for 5-0 John Bapst of Bangor. Billy Chapman made 12 saves on 18 shots.

Matt Petrie had a goal on Mike Stoup’s assist for the 1-2-1 Indians. Tyler Tracewski made 10 saves on 16 shots.

JV: Old Town 3-1

Nokomis 1, Hermon 0 (2OT)

At Newport, Justin Palmer blasted home the game-winner with just seven seconds remaining in the second overtime. Justin Veazie got credit for the assist, and their Warriors picked up their first win. They improve to 1-3.

Mike Jacques posted the shutout, stopping all 12 Hermon shots.

Matt Watson stopped 10 of 10 for the 2-3-1 Hawks.

JV: 1-1

George Stevens 4, Bucksport 1

At Bucksport, Jed Garvey banged home two goals as the Eagles of Blue Hill rolled.

Matt Gray and Ethan Roberts also found the back of the net for 3-3 George Stevens. James Friend faced 10 shots.

Bobby Bouchard scored for the 0-5 Golden Bucks. Trevor Stevens was the netminder.

Penobscot Valley 3, Central 2

At Howland, Dustin Nicholson found the back of the net twice as the Howlers edged the Red Devils of Corinth.

Keith Champion added a goal for the 3-1-1 winners. Lance Pelkey made 14 saves on 16 shots.

Joe Allen notched a goal and an assist for 2-2-1 Central. Tom Palmers added a goal, and Chris Parker added an assist. Adam Allen turned away 15 of 18 shots.

MDI 1, Hampden 1 (2OT)

At Mount Desert Island, the Broncos’ Chris Walker scored an unassisted goal with eight minutes left in regulation, and no one scored again.

Ken Mayo saved eight of 14 shots for 1-1-2 Hampden.

B.J. Greenleaf scored off an assist from Blake Carr in the first half for the 2-0-2 Trojans. Adam Phurston notched 12 saves on 19 shots.

JV: Hampden 2-1

Machias 4, Sumner 0

At East Sullivan, Austin Roberts scored two goals to lead the Bulldogs to the win.

Joe Richards added a goal and an assist for the winners. Ed St. Pierre also found the back of the net for Machias. Marcus Frutchey got the shutout, making 14 saves on 19 shots.

Jason Guest and J.J. Phinney combined to turn away six of 12 shots for the Tigers.

Girls Soccer

Old Town 0, Orono 0 (2OT)

At Orono, this version of the Mill Town-College Town rivalry ended up in a scoreless tie. Only 17 shots were attempted on goal and just seven saves were necessary. The Indians are now 3-0-1, while the Red Riots are 1-2-1.

Old Town’s goaltender was Whitney Carey, who faced only six shots, and saved three of them. Orono’s Joelle Clingerman faced the bulk of the shots (11), and saved four of them.

JV: Old Town 2-0

Carrabec 1, Monmouth 1 (2OT)

At Carrabec, the 3-1-1 Cobras and 2-2-2 Mustangs battled to a 1-1 knot in double-overtime.

Jillian Manzer scored off a Kristina Williams assist for Carrabec. Megan Carbone stopped 15 of 25 shots.

Emmy Gauther scored Monmouth’s goal. Amy Parsons made eight saves on nine shots.

JV: Carrabec 2-1

Hampden 9, Brewer 0

At Hampden, Katie Lindemann banged home three goals and Tyne Franchi added two as the Broncos remained unbeaten with a win over Brewer.

Hampden improved to 3-0. Emily O’Connell chipped in with two assists for the Broncs. Kim Stephens, Kasiy McCluskey, Laura Martin and Sarah Robichaud each had a goal. Hampden’s defense allowed the Witches (1-2) only two shots on net. Amy Russell and Gabby Schrage combined to save both of them.

Stephanie Dickey turned away four of 16 shots for Brewer.

JV: Hampden 6-1

Fort Fairfield 5, GHCA 1

At Fort Fairfield, Miranda Butler banged home two goals as the Tigers rolled.

Sabrina Butler, Jen Enman and Brittany McLaughlin also found the back of the net for 3-9-1 Fort Fairfield. Kaylee Searles and Libby Gardner combined to stop two of four shots.

Sarah Wallace scored 1-1-1 Greater Houlton Christian’s loan goal. Megan Jago saved 12 of 20 shots.

Narraguagus 3, DI-Stonington 0

At Harrington, Jen Strout kicked in two goals as the Knights blanked the Mariners.

Sarah Snider got the shutout, facing only nine shots and saving five of them. Missy Barbee found the back of the net for the winners.

Roz Santospago made 12 saves on 25 shots for Deer Isle-Stonington.

Katahdin 6, So. Aroostook 1

At Sherman Station, K.C. Duffy-Stanley scored three goals to lead the Katahdin Cougars past Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook.

Krystal McMorin, Scarlet McAvoy and Cyle McAvoy each scored one goal for the 3-2-1 Cougars. Mindy Libby and Morgan Anderson combined to make four saves on five shots.

For the 0-7 Warriors, Holly Toothaker scored an unassisted goal and Crystal Cameron saved six of 12 shots.

Ashland 3, Washburn 0

At Washburn, Jessica Jacques scored two goals to lead the Hornets past the Beavers.

Amanda Martin chipped with a goal and an assist for 6-1 Ashland while Kim Oakes made 10 saves on 18 shots.

Morgan Sickles saved nine of 18 shots for 2-8-2 Washburn.

Field Hockey

Foxcroft 2, Bangor 0

At Dover-Foxcroft, Emily Austin’s goal on a penalty stroke helped the 3-0-1 Ponies remain unbeaten.

Ashley McKusick also found the back of the net for the winners. Megan Ryder only had to save one of two Bangor shots to get the shutout.

Allison Frazier and Frankee Waldron combined to stop 16 of 24 shots for the 1-3 Rams.

JV: 0-0

Hermon 3, John Bapst 2

At Bangor, Jessica Depry scored two goals as the Hawks withstood the Crusaders rally and held on for the win.

Noelle O’Clair added a goal for 1-3 Hermon. Natalie Bell saved six of 13 shots.

Sara Stratton and Logan Rich each had a goal and an assist for 1-3 John Bapst. Julia Sleeper stopped four of eight shots.

JV: Hermon 2-1

Old Town 3, Hampden 1

At Hampden, Kendall Tracewski found the back of the net three times as the Indians emerged.

Emelie Richard faced just seven shots, and saved six of them. The one she didn’t save came on a goal by Mary-Ann Alley of Hampden. Jennifer Hessert stopped 11 of 14 shots for the Broncos.

JV: Hampden 1-0

Nokomis 2, Brewer 0

At Brewer, Gill Snow and Ashley MacKenzie each scored in the last three minutes as the Warriors of Newport prevailed.

MacKenzie added an assist for 2-2 Nokomis.

JV: Nokomis 4-0
