The major change devotees of the Bangor Junior League Antique Show & Sale will find is that the event, now in its 51st year, is a one-evening, one-day affair.

Previous shows have begun with a preview Friday evening and run through Sunday.

This year, the show features a Preview Night Reception and Sale from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, and the Antique Show & Sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Bangor Civic Center.

Giving the fund-raiser what it calls a “face-lift,” officials of this year’s benefit for community services and needs will debut a selection of fine art and extend Friday and Saturday hours, with no show Sunday.

Approximately 50 select antiques and collectibles dealers from throughout New England will be part of the fund-raiser.

Friday’s preview night features classical music, wines, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction.

Tickets for preview night are $22.50 per person and include Saturday admission to the show.

However, reservations are required for this event and can be made by calling 990-0367.

As a point of information for people who have received the preview mailing, the reservation number listed on that mailing is incorrect. The above number is the one to call.

Pre-sale show tickets, available from Junior League members, are $4. Tickets at the door are $5 each.

Proceeds from the show are invested by the Junior League in projects benefiting residents of eastern Maine, such as Literacy Volunteers of America and the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor.

The Junior League, whose members volunteer many hours for community projects, is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Auditions soon will be conducted for young people interested in becoming members of the Bangor Area Children’s Choir.

BACC secretary Kathy Lena of Orono recently wrote to inform readers about the nonprofit, nonsectarian community children’s choir.

“It was organized in 1992 and is not affiliated with any church or public school,” she wrote. “Last year, its members represented 12 towns and 17 schools from the Greater Bangor area.

“In the spring of 2000, BACC reorganized into a two-choir program comprised of the Choir, directed by Michele Hall of Bangor, and a Youth Chorale, directed by Jean Sigler of Brewer.”

Choir auditions will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at All Souls Congregational Church on Broadway in Bangor. Callbacks will be conducted from 7:30 to 9 p.m. that evening.

Singers must be no younger than 9 years old and no older than 16 as of Monday, Oct. 1, and they must sing in the treble voice range.

Lena wrote that “it is not necessary to prepare any music. All singers will be evaluated for listening skills, rhythmic ability, pitch and voice quality.”

A group audition will be held from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at All Souls Congregational Church, where the choir rehearses from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays.

For those who would like to make plans to participate, National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremonies are scheduled for four Maine communities this month.

The ceremony to honor prisoners of war or those missing in action will be held Friday, Sept. 21, in Perry, Augusta and Jay and Sunday, Sept. 23, in Houlton.

Organizers are trying to locate former POWs and their families and family members of MIAs so they can attend these ceremonies.

The 14th Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk will be held at several sites throughout the state.

Registration for all the walks begins at 7:45 a.m., with the walks starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.

Walk sites include Portland, Biddeford-Saco, Lewiston-Auburn, South Paris, Augusta, Waterville, Rockland and Dexter.

Each walker who collects $25 or more receives a free T-shirt.

The Augusta walk begins at the FAME building on Community Drive. To register or receive more information about that walk, call Angie Schultz at 621-0083.

This event is considered the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

According to Jon Paradise, statewide communications chairman for the walk, MCCP “does not turn any child away” and the organization not only treats the child but also offers “support and services to the entire family.”
