A football game originally scheduled to be played Friday night has been moved to Saturday night in order to observe a national day of prayer for the victims of Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.
Officials at Bucksport and Stearns of Millinocket high schools talked late Friday afternoon and decided to make the change. Stearns athletic director Don Dow said officials at his school saw a note on the Maine Principals’ Association Web site.
The Stearns-Bucksport game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. in Millinocket. A cross country meet at Bucksport set for Friday has been moved to Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
According to the note, the MPA had received phone calls from schools wondering whether or not to play Friday. President Bush had declared the day in honor of the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Centers and Pentagon.
The ultimate decision was to be local, the MPA said. The MPA advised schools in the note that it “[encourages] member schools to consider extending the spirit of reflection by postponing after school activities scheduled for Friday, September 14.” Stearns is doing just that.
“In light of the national day of mourning, we decided to postpone,” Dow said. “I thought we all had to … do what’s right.”
It was unknown at press time if other games were moved from Friday to Saturday.
