MPA note leads to some Friday events postponed

A football game originally scheduled to be played Friday night has been moved to Saturday night in order to observe a national day of prayer for the victims of Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.

Officials at Bucksport and Stearns of Millinocket high schools talked late Friday afternoon and decided to make the change. Stearns athletic director Don Dow said officials at his school saw a note on the Maine Principals’ Association Web site.

The Stearns-Bucksport game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. in Millinocket.

A cross country meet at Bucksport set for Friday has been moved to Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

According to the note, the MPA had received phone calls from schools wondering whether to play Friday. President Bush had declared the day in honor of the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Centers and Pentagon.

The ultimate decision was to be local, the MPA said. The MPA advised schools in the note that it “[encourages] member schools to consider extending the spirit of reflection by postponing after school activities scheduled for Friday, September 14.”

Stearns is doing just that.

“In light of the national day of mourning, we decided to postpone,” Dow said. “I thought we all had to … do what’s right.”

It was unknown at presstime if other contests were moved from Friday to Saturday.

Girls soccer

Hampden 8, MDI 1

At Mount Desert, Tyne Franchi, Kate Lindemann and Jani Bosse scored two goals apiece Thursday to propel Hampden Academy past Mount Desert Island.

Kim Stephenson racked up a goal and four assists and Alex Hudspeth scored one for the 4-0 Broncos. Emmy Russell made three saves on six shots.

Tanya Kane knocked in a penalty kick for the 0-4 Trojans. Sarah Johnson and Katrina Smith combined for 19 saves on 27 shots.

Bangor 2, Ellsworth 1

At Ellsworth, Laura Clarke and Kate Woodcock were credited with unassisted goals as the Rams edged the Eagles.

For 2-1 Bangor, Katherine Miller recorded nine saves on 17 shots.

Jodie Merchant recorded a goal on a Monica Gardner pass for 3-1-1 Ellsworth. Victoria Jones made seven saves on 15 shots.

JV: Bangor 2-1 (OT)

John Bapst 1, Old Town 1 (2OT)

At Bangor, Becky Standley of Old Town scored on a Mallory Brown pass with 24:40 remaining in the second half to tie the game and end the scoring.

Whitney Carey stopped 11 of 17 shots for 3-0-2 Old Town.

For 3-0-1 John Bapst, Katie Rice garnered a goal on an assist from Julie Crotty. Alex Waring made 11 saves on 17 attempts.

Lee Academy 7, Schenck 0

At Lee, a well-rounded scoring effort was key as the Pandas cruised to the win.

Shelby Pickering, Melissa Hanscom and Deidra Ham scored two goals apiece for 5-0 Lee. Ashley Gifford added a goal and an assist and Kristen Hersom had an assist. Katie Harris and Sam Cole combined for 10 saves on 10 shots.

Megan Carey stopped 16 of 24 shots for the 2-2 Wolverines of East Millinocket.

Penobscot Valley 6, Central 1

At Howland, five different players scored for the Howlers as they rolled to the win.

Alicia Drost led Penobscot Valley with two goals and two assists. Meagan Cyr and Aryn Ryder each added a goal and an assists, while Randy Rackley and Erica Bernard had a goal apiece. Kylie McGinn stopped eight of nine shots.

Julie McDonald knocked in a goal on a direct kick for the Red Devils of Corinth. Nicole Daniel made 12 saves on 30 shots.

Greenville 6, Bangor Christian 2

At Greenville, Cindy Lebel racked up three goals and three assists to power the undefeated Lakers to their sixth win.

Jillian Bouley added two goals and Diane Aucoin chipped in with another for Greenville. Jessie Craft made six saves on 14 shots.

Heather Niles and Becky Fortin each scored a goal for the 0-3 Patriots. Kendil Snow made 16 saves on 28 shots.

Averill 2, Highview Christian 1

At Hinckley, Brittany Rauscher racked up a pair of unassisted goals as the Beavers halted the Knights.

Sally Jenkins made 12 saves on 18 shots for 2-0 Averill.

For 0-2 Highview Christian of Charleston, Carissa Cary fired in a penalty kick. Sherry Cooper turned away 11 of 16 shots.

Boys soccer

BC Patriots 1, Greenville 1 (OT)

At Bangor, Richard Folsom scored off a Jonathan Ethier free kick early in the second half as Greenville rallied for a draw.

Ethier’s direct kick from just outside the penalty area glanced off the chest of Bangor Christian goalie D.J. McCleary and Folsom slotted home the rebound.

Matt Conley’s first-half penalty kick accounted for the Patriot goal.

Aaron Crossman made 15 saves on 21 shots for 3-0-1 Greenville while McCleary stopped 17 of 27 shots for the 3-1-1 Patriots.

Field hockey

Central 2, Orono 1

At Orono, Renee Trafton poked in a loose ball in front of the net with 1:03 remaining in the game to lift the Red Devils over Orono.

Casey Davis added an unassisted goal for 4-1 Central. Cindy Dehm made 11 saves on 12 shots.

For 0-4 Orono, Emily Reed recorded a goal. Ana Blagojevic stopped 10 of 12 shots fired her way.

Stearns 2, John Bapst 1

At Millinocket, Candace Achorn’s second-half goal proved to be the game-winner as the Minutemen held off the Crusaders.

Holly Franck scored for 3-1-1 Stearns in the first half. Becca Saucier made 11 saves on 12 shots.

Kristina Atkinson scored off an assist from Megan Gekeler in the second half for 1-4 John Bapst of Bangor. Julie Sleeper made 12 saves on 14 shots.
