CALAIS – Local police have charged a 21-year-old clerk with filing a false report in connection with an incident at the Calais Mainway early Thursday morning.

During a press briefing on Friday, Calais Police Chief Michael Milburn said the clerk, Joseph Brewer of Calais, initially told police he had been assaulted by two individuals who had attempted to rob the store, located on the corner of South and Main streets. Brewer was working alone at the store at the time.

The man did have “slight injuries” and was taken by ambulance to the hospital and later released. Milburn said investigators had no information as to how Brewer obtained those injuries.

“We conducted a canine search of the area and investigated the report,” Milburn said. “As a result of that investigation, we determined that the clerk had falsified the report.”

Nothing was missing from the convenience store.

Brewer, who has worked for Mainway for about one year, later admitted that he had made up the account of the attempted robbery, Milburn said. He said there was no indication as to why Brewer made the false report.

Police issued Brewer a summons charging him with making a false public report. He is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 6.
