Mainers unite in charity after terror attacks

Following are tangible contributions Maine people are making to assist those stricken by the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington:

AUGUSTA – At the request of New York Gov. George Pataki, Gov. Angus King is releasing the following information to those who wish to donate to relief efforts for the terrorist attacks this week.

The New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund can be reached by calling 1-800-801-8092. Donations, which are preferred to calls, can be sent to: New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund; P.O. Box 5028, Albany, N.Y. 12205.

HAMPDEN – The Hampden Fire Department will hold a car wash from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the fire station with all proceeds going to the families of the firefighters and emergency service workers who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in New York City.

BANGOR – All Saints School pupils raised $1,000 for the American Red Cross through donations on their “dress down” day, according to principal Tom Lynch. “We had students who emptied their piggy banks to contribute,” Lynch said Friday. The students will present the funds to the Red Cross on Monday.

CORINTH – The student council and honor society at Central High School collected more than $2,500 this week and presented the money to the American Red Cross on Friday to be used to help victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. The money was raised by many of the school’s 370 pupils contributing dollars and coins in a jar. At an assembly, the Nokomis High School ROTC honor guard marched in procession. Representatives from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines also attended.

Goodwill Industries announced Friday it will sell snow globes of New York’s Radio City Music Hall with 90 percent of proceeds going to the American Red Cross. More than 300 globes will be offered for sale in Maine and New Hampshire at Goodwill’s 24 retail stores. There are Goodwill stores in Bangor, Rockland, Waterville, Augusta, Auburn, Biddeford, Brunswick, Portland and Lewiston.

HERMON – Hermon Meadow Golf Club will be donating all funds from greens fees and golf cart rentals on Sunday, Sept. 16, to the American Red Cross Relief Fund.

The Salvation Army is collecting the following items at all its locations to help those working at the New York and Pentagon terrorist attack sites: Gatorade, bottled water, snack packs, T-shirts, work gloves and heavy socks. The items can be dropped off at any Salvation Army office in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The collection will continue through next week.

BANGOR – Donations are being accepted at the Pet Quarters store on Stillwater Ave., for the K-9 New York City Search and Rescue Team. Items needed include: Heavy bowls, beds and mattresses, reflective collars, anti-bacterial creams, booties, reflective vests and Bag Balm. DEXTER – The Dexter Fire Department will hold a car wash from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Dexter Police Station on Main Street to benefit New York City firefighters. Donations also may be sent to Skowhegan Savings Bank, c/o NYC Firefighters, P.O. Box 193, Dexter 04930.
