Brewer rolls to third win MCI, Bucks, Foxcroft, Mattanawcook post victories

FRYEBURG – Josh Caldwell and Seth Emerson each rushed for two touchdowns as the Brewer Witches rolled to a 41-0 high school football victory over the Fryeburg Academy Raiders Saturday.

Emerson also returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown for Brewer, and he added TD runs of 80 and 20 yards. Caldwell’s touchdown runs covered 18 and two yards. Jeremiah Richter added a two-yard scoring run.

Emerson finished up with six carries for 129 yards while Caldwell had 61 yards on seven carries as the Witches wound up with 354 yards, all but 15 on the ground. Brewer held Fryeburg to 27 rushing yards and 26 passing while helping force four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

At Pittsfield, the Huskies rolled up 424 rushing yards in their win over John Bapst of Bangor.

Tom Twombly carried the ball 26 times for 313 yards and three touchdowns including runs of 80 and 66 yards for scores.

Mike Broccio picked up 105 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns, including a 60-yard interception return. Broccio also had 15 tackles while Luke McGowan had 10 tackles and one sack for Maine Central Institute.

Alex Rand carried 19 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Pat Healy chipped in with 108 yards on 20 carries for the Crusaders.

Mattanawcook 14, Dexter 13

At Dexter, Tyler Gardner’s four-yard touchdown run with just under a minute left and Matt Malone’s PAT kick gave the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx of Lincoln a win and Dexter its first loss.

Sophomore back Ty Gardner scored both of the Lynx touchdowns en route to 160 yards on 25 carries. MA’s defense was led by John Woodman (11 tackles) and Ryan Leighton (nine).

Kevin Armstrong gained 69 yards on 22 carries and had an interception on defense for the Tigers, who had a score called back in the final 30 seconds due to an illegal formation penalty. The infraction wiped out Adam Russell’s 65-yard TD catch off a screen pass.

At Mount Desert, Nick Russell had 22 carries for 262 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams rolled.

Sheldon Jones added a touchdown run for the winners. He had 14 carries for 97 yards. The Rams racked up 363 rushing yards. Dustin Spiller caught a 12-yard TD pass from Kendrick Ballantyne.

John Lewis had 32 carries for 165 yards and a score for the Trojans. Travis Tripp launched a TD pass to Greg Fellis.

At Old Town, quarterback Brian Callahan had his best day of the season as he completed six of seven passes for three touchdowns and 124 yards in helping lead Lake Region past the Indians.

Tight end Andrew Robinson had three catches for two TDs and 76 yards while linebackers Chris Maher and Aaron Ross led the defense with continual pressure on Old Town, which managed just 27 yards in total offense in the first half.

Old Town senior fullback Adam Sokoloski rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for a touchdown and 25 yards. Tailback Roger Cole had six catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns and led the Indians’ defense with 14 tackles and a fumble recovery. Jeremy Stormann completed 10 of 29 passes for 102 yards and three TDs.

At Millinocket, tailback Warren Chase raced 75 yards upfield to score a touchdown on the second play of the game and the Golden Bucks never trailed in the game.

Chase rushed for 138 yards and two TDs with 22 carries for the Bucks. Defensive tackles Eric Mitchell and Mike Dargon, along with end Matt Carrier, led the defense.

Devin Johnson led Stearns’ defense with 10 tackles and two assisted tackles.

At Wales, the Oak Hill Raiders of Sabattus made a late defensive stand and overcame the loss of two key offensive starters by holding off the visiting Tigers.

After Rockland scored to move within two points in the fourth quarter, Adam Buckingham tipped the two-point conversion pass away to preserve the Raider lead. Later, with 1:40 to play, freshman corner Adam Shaffstall knocked away a 4th-and-8 pass from Rockland’s Jacob LaBree to squelch the Tigers’ comeback attempt.

Oak Hill backs Brett Boucher and Josh Poisson combined for 74 yards rushing, but both had to leave the game with injuries in the second half.

At Brunswick, quarterback Jordan Stebbins completed six of 16 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns as his visiting Tigers snapped a 13-game losing streak.

Gardiner senior wide receiver Shawn Cloutier caught two touchdown passes, amassed over 100 receiving yards, and returned an interception 99 yards for another TD.

Brunswick QB Paul Sawyer was 10-for-18 for 178 yards to lead the Dragons.

At Augusta, the Rams broke into the win column behind a 27-point third-quarter scoring binge.

Cony was led by fullback Jesse Cox, who had 20 carries for 116 yards. Dustin Thibodeau had 65 yards on 11 carries and senior Caleb McKenzie, in his first game back from an ankle injury, completed all three passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Sean Brawn led the defense with 13 tackles and a fumble recovery while Dustin Thibodeau had nine tackles.

Five different players scored for Cony, but the back-breaker was Nkolo Nyada’s 82-yard interception return in the fourth quarter.

At Dover-Foxcroft, junior running back Danny White scored three touchdowns on four carries and finished with 101 yards rushing to lead the host Ponies past the previously unbeaten Red Riots.

Jeff Steinke and Trey Merrill each had seven tackles and Merrill added a sack as the Ponies limited the Riots to 59 total rushing yards and 48 passing. Foxcroft used 15 ballcarriers en route to 284 yards on 42 carries.

Orono’s Ben Briggs scored the team’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter.

At Winslow, the Black Raiders used their passing connection between quarterback Chris Langlais and Sam Hapworth with great success in a win over Mountain Valley of Rumford.

The pair hooked up for seven completions- including an 18-yard touchdown catch – for 114 yards.

Langlais completed 10 of 14 passes for 159 yards and two TDs. He also scored the other two TDs as he rushed six times for 44 yards. Sophomore back Derek Runnels finished with 103 yards on 14 carries.

The Falcons were held to 154 total yards, 70 of which came on Josh Meisner’s touchdown run in the first quarter.

At Oakland, Eric Castonguay kicked a pair of first-half field goals and Chad Dennis scored a touchdown as the Eagles rode a strong first half to victory.

Chad Dennis led the Eagles with 53 yards on 22 carries as it was defense that kept Lawrence of Fairfield from rallying.

Junior running back Keith Palmer gained 96 yards on 10 carries, all in the second half and most on a 72-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. With 81/2 minutes to play, the Bulldogs drove from the Eagles’ 42-yard line to the 15, but Messalonskee’s Len Goff tackled Lawrence QB Jared Bragdon on a fourth down run to end the threat.

At Skowhegan, a key turnover by the Indians with nine minutes left led to the decisive score as Waterville quarterback hit Ryan Lockard hit Matt Picurro for a 26-yard touchdown pass on the very next play from scrimmage.

Cody DeGuzman led the Purple Panthers with 89 yards rushing on 15 carries. Lockard added a touchdown run on a bootleg late in the game to ice it.

Quarterback B.J. Dunlap completed seven of 23 passes for 110 yards with one interception.

At Madison, the Bulldogs won their second straight game as senior Chris Price gained 158 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.

The Bulldogs racked up 351 total yards of offense as quarterback Jared Deck hit on six of 12 passes for 72 yards.

The Seagulls drew first blood with Dustin Hunter’s 82-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff. They added another TD when Craig Nason scooped up a fumble and ran it 18 yards into the end zone in the fourth quarter.

At Turner, a new offensive scheme paid off for the Leavitt Hornets in a battle of winless teams and a return matchup of the teams which battled for the 1998 Class B state title.

Turnovers killed the visiting Broncos of Hampden Academy as the Hornets scored on their first two possessions and never looked back.

Hampden?s only score came on quarterback Evan Thomas? sneak from the 1-yard line. Thomas then hit Tristan Grover for a two-point conversion pass in the second quarter.
