BANGOR – What was called into Bangor police as a man with a gun in the Home Depot Store Monday afternoon turned out to be an angry man carrying a cellular phone.
It was a classic case of road rage, according to Bangor police, who summoned 31-year-old Michael MacDonald of Carmel for driving to endanger and terrorizing.
According to Bangor Police Officer Jim Deering, MacDonald became angry when a motorcycle allegedly cut him off on the Hogan Road shortly before noon.
Deering said MacDonald followed the motorcyclist into the Home Depot parking lot and proceeded to chase him around the parking lot five or six times. MacDonald was driving a Ford Bronco.
One officer at the scene called the situation very dangerous with the men driving between and around parked cars.
The motorcyclist jumped off his bike, according to police, and ran into the store.
Deering said MacDonald followed him inside, carrying a cell phone and allegedly making threats to the motorcyclist.
“Witnesses say he was running and yelling and he was carrying his cell phone which has an antenna at the end and someone thought it was a gun,” Deering said.
Police from throughout the city converged on Home Depot and found that MacDonald had tried to leave the parking lot, but had been blocked by other shoppers.
The motorcyclist was allowed to leave, but MacDonald was detained and eventually summoned and released.
