Week three of the high school gridiron season doesn’t offer a lot of eye-catching contests at first glance, but three in particular bear watching as they involve teams with lots of early momentum who are trying to increase the breathing room between themselves and their opposition.
Bangor (3-0) at Lewiston (2-1), 7 p.m., Franklin Complex: The Rams take on the Blue Devils for the first time since 1994, which also happens to be the last time Bangor was shut out in a regular season game. This once annual rivalry gets reinstated with the Rams having won seven of the last 10 meetings. Bangor is riding a 57-game regular-season streak in which it has not been shut out since Oct. 14, 1994, according to league statistician Bob Woodbury.
The Rams are tops offensively in the Pine Tree Conference with 353.3 yards per game and No. 2 defensively, allowing 173.3. Lewiston is seventh offensively (248.7) and sixth defensively (232.0).
Bangor is healthy, but Lewiston may be without tough tailback Brandon Kyajohnian (382 yards on 63 carries) after he left the game with an injury last week.
Lewiston likes to run out of the I-formation and has big people up front. The Rams, who feature an aggressive, stingy defense and balanced offense; are led by the tailback Buddy Nickerson, the PTC’s leading rusher with 7.2 yards per carry, six touchdowns, and 474 total yards, and quarterback Chris Bombardier (21-of-39 for 257 yards and three TDs).
Dexter (2-1) at Bucksport (2-1), 7 p.m., Carmichael Field: The host Golden Bucks can really start to open up a big lead in the LTC Class C southeast division with a win over the greatly improved Tigers, who need a win to either be even or a game up on three other teams. The key to stopping Bucksport is finding some way to stop speedy running back Warren Chase, who has amassed 335 yards and five TDs on 44 carries so far. Dexter has great offensive balance with backs Adam Russell and Kevin Armstrong plus quarterback Vinnie Greene.
Maine Central Institute (1-2) at Mattanawcook Academy (2-1), 7 p.m., Alumni Field, Lincoln: The defending East Class C champs need a win to avoid getting in a hole early on while the young Lynx of Lincoln would gain a lot of confidence with a victory. MA sophomore back Ty Gardner is quickly coming into his own with 305 yards in three games while MCI tailback Tom Twombly is coming off a 313-yard rushing performance last week.
Stearns (0-3) at Orono (2-1), 7 p.m.: The Minutemen look more like a M.A.S.H. unit than a football team as injuries have decimated their ranks. Head coach Chris Preble has used four different starters at center and has had 12 starters knocked out at various times due to injuries. Only one member of the offensive line has not changed position and only two have remained in the lineup. Eight players are currently sidelined with two lost for the season: junior fullback-linebacker Will McLaughlin (broken tibia and fibula) and two-way tackle Terry Leet (broken wrist). Orono must win to stay even in a crowded LTC C Northeast division playoff field.
Scarborough (3-0) at Brewer (3-0), 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Doyle Field: It’s a huge game for both teams as Brewer wants to show its record isn’t a product of a soft early schedule and Scarborough wants to serve notice that it’s a playoff contender in its first official season of Class B ball.
Brewer likes to play ball-control ball with a running game led by Seth Emerson and Josh Caldwell and an aggressive defense lead by a veteran linebacking quartet. Scarborough has offensive versatility with running backs Nial Demena and Max Valverde and senior quarterback Robbie Paul, who threw for 12 TDs with only one interception last year.
Foxcroft Academy (2-1) at John Bapst (0-3), 7 p.m. Saturday, Cameron Stadium: The hard-charging Ponies visit Bapst fresh off a 284-yard rushing effort last week. The young Crusaders, who have been a tough team to put away the last two weeks, are trying to snap a 13-game losing streak. Foxcroft’s three-headed backfield of Danny White, Derek Morong and Josh Sands keeps the Ponies rush attack fresh. Pat Healy leads the run game for Bapst with 333 yards in three games.
