University of Maine hockey coach Shawn Walsh will remain in the intensive care unit at Bangor’s Eastern Maine Medical Center until he is healthy enough to return home, according to his younger brother, Kevin.
Walsh, who is suffering from kidney cancer, is currently recovering from a bout of pneumonia.
He underwent a stem cell transplant in May in the hope that the donated stem cells from Kevin will attack and destroy the remaining cancerous tumors.
“He has good days and bad days,” said Kevin.
Shawn Walsh, who is beginning his 18th year at Maine, will probably miss the first on-ice practice on Tuesday at Alfond Arena in Orono.
UMPI to induct Fahey, Cheney
Loretta Fahey and Harold Cheney will be inducted into the University of Maine-Presque Isle’s Owls Hall of Fame during Homecoming festivities Saturday, Sept. 29.
Cheney will be inducted posthumously.
Fahey, a 1975 UMPI graduate, played basketball and volleyball for the school and went on to become a successful coach in several sports. After compiling a 43-0-5 record in three season as JV coach, she became the varsity field hockey coach at Medfield (Mass.) High School.
She guided Medfield to its first state-champion appearance and an undefeated record the next season. Fahey was named the state’s coach of the year in 1986 and was twice selected as a coach at the U.S. National Olympic Festival.
Fahey also coached the gold-medal winning team at the Massachusetts Bay State Games and has coached 21 players who have gone on to play in college.
Cheney played basketball at Presque Isle High School and helped the school win a state title in 1932. He also played semi-pro baseball with the Presque Isle Indians and was named the team’s MVP.
During his time at UMPI, then the Normal School, he played baseball and helped start the school’s first football team. Cheney was later drafted by the Boston Red Sox and played in their farm system. He was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame last summer.
Tickets are available for the ceremony and banquet. Those interested may call the UMPI Athletic Department at 768-9475 or 768-9506.
