BANGOR – A Bangor man was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but two years suspended Monday for the rape of a woman in a Second Street apartment last August.

James Johnson, 22, pleaded guilty before Penobscot County Superior Court Justice Andrew Mead on Monday morning to Class A gross sexual assault for the Aug. 14 rape.

The 18-year-old victim told police she was staying with a friend and was alone in the apartment late one night when Johnson knocked on the door and asked to use the phone. The victim knew his first name and had seen him at the downtown Tavern Restaurant and Lounge, she told police.

The victim said after he made his phone call, Johnson struck her and pushed her to the floor and raped her.

Johnson eventually admitted the assault when questioned by police.

On Monday, Johnson, who was in court with his attorney Julio DeSanctis, pleaded guilty. In addition to the prison sentence, Johnson was ordered to serve six years probation, stay away from the victim, undergo counseling and register as a convicted violent sex offender.
