Conley directs Colby to first win of season

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Colby built a 28-7 lead, then held off a late Middlebury rush by recovering an onside kick with 1 minute left to beat the Panthers 28-21 Saturday.

Colby (1-1) piled up 443 yards as Pat Conley passed 9 yards to Danny Noyes for one score, Joe Murray and Aaron Stepka each ran 1 yard for touchdowns and Lee Carlson ran 12 yards for a score.

But Bill Lazzaro ran 8 yards for a touchdown for Middlebury (1-1) with 4:26 left and added a 1-yard scoring run with 1:04 remaining.

Tufts 41, Bates 12

At Lewiston, Keven Kelley rushed for 156 yards on 27 carries to lead Tufts University to a 41-12 win over Bates College Saturday.

Tufts (2-0) rushed for a total of 340 yards and opened the scoring with a 70-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Scott Treacy to Matt Cerne on the first play of their second possession of the game.

Bridgewater 35, MMA 7

At Bridgewater, Mass., Andy Brems rushed for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday to lead Bridgewater State to a 35-7 win over Maine Maritime.

Brian St. Germain added 109 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Bears (2-2), who rushed for 300 yards overall.

Maine Maritime (0-4) turned the ball over seven times, including four interceptions thrown by Eric McCaslin.

Maine Maritime averted a second straight shutout when Don Thibodeau scored on an 8-yard run with 29 seconds left in the game.

Amherst 35, Bowdoin 0

At Amherst, Mass., Jeff Browne completed 10 of 17 passes for 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Derrell Wright caught six passes for 106 yards Saturday as Amherst defeated Bowdoin 35-0.

The Jeffs (2-0) had 411 yards of total offense.
