BANGOR – A Bangor man who allegedly hit a bicyclist earlier this week in Seal Cove appeared Wednesday in 3rd District Court in Bangor and remained in Hancock County Jail Wednesday night.

Frederick Ward, 21, appeared before Judge Ronald Russell, who set bail at $5,000 surety or $500 cash.

Ward was arrested late Monday night after a chase through the woods in Bangor. The search for Ward began just after the accident, which occurred at about 4:15 p.m. that afternoon.

The 54-year-old bicyclist, Maureen Smilkstein of Colorado Springs, Colo., suffered cuts, bruises and a fractured finger. She was treated at Mount Desert Island Hospital and released.

Deputies said Ward left the scene at a high rate of speed. He allegedly abandoned the car he had been driving near his father’s Southwest Harbor home and took another vehicle.

Bangor police were alerted that Ward might be in Bangor, and officers stopped him late Monday night. Ward allegedly fled on foot into the woods.

Police and a search dog tracked him down and arrested him.

He was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
