OLD TOWN – If a soccer game was decided by time of possession, the Bangor High School girls soccer team would have enjoyed its bus ride home from Old Town Thursday.

It isn’t and the Rams didn’t.

Junior midfielder Renee Thibodeau’s first career goal snapped a scoreless tie with 28:58 remaining and Melanie Cox added an insurance goal with 5:01 remaining to give Old Town a 2-0 triumph over the Rams Thursday.

“They controlled most of the play, but we capitalized on our chances,” said senior striker Meghan King, who set up Thibodeau’s game-winner by chasing down a ball in the right corner, beating a defender, and crossing it to the top of the penalty area where Thibodeau ran on to it.

“The defender thought I was going to cross it, but I cut it back,” explained King. “Renee is usually open.”

The unmarked Thibodeau struck the ball immediately and her low shot glanced in off the body of Bangor goalie Katherine Miller. Miller dove across the goalmouth to her right, but Thibodeau’s shot skipped to the goalie’s left.

“I came rolling right in and I got a good piece of it,” said Thibodeau.

Bangor pressed for the equalizer and almost got it when sophomore striker Laura Clarke ripped a hard left-footed shot off the crossbar after shielding the ball from a defender off an Amanda Goldsmith pass.

Clarke was Bangor’s best offensive threat throughout thanks to her skills, strength, and tenacity.

But the 7-1-4 Indians, who have allowed only four goals all season, did an effective job getting numbers behind the ball in the defensive third and goalie Jessica Paul, the starting stopper who was filling in for the injured Whitney Carey, wasn’t forced to make any dramatic saves.

She did catch a break in the first half when Justine Smith’s 10-yard shot to her right hit the inside of the far post. Paul scooped the loose ball away as the Rams converged on the rebound.

Cox iced the game when she scampered to the goal on a Hannah Marquis free kick and pushed the ball, with help from a Ram defender, behind Miller.

“I got a piece of it, but the defender got more of a piece of it,” said Cox, whose goal was her first of the season.

Paul finished with four saves on 19 shots while Miller stopped four of nine shots for the 6-4-1 Rams.

JV: Bangor 3-0
