PORTLAND – The theme of this year’s Maine State Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting is “The Ireland Connection.” During the event being held from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Eastland Park Hotel, business leaders from throughout the state will explore the economic parallels between Maine and Ireland, noting that country’s economic revitalization and ways we can use its solutions to address Maine’s current business climate.

During a workshop that begins at 4 p.m., Dr. John Fitzsimmons, president of the Maine Technical College System, and Dr. Richard Pattenaude, president of the University of Southern Maine, will introduce Maine’s most current work force development project, the Workforce Needs Survey. This joint educational initiative between the Maine Technical College System and the Maine State Chamber of Commerce is a step toward the same economic prosperity Ireland has experienced. The survey’s work, progress, and vision also will be discussed.

A networking reception at 5:30 p.m. will be followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and award presentations at 7:30 p.m.

After dinner, Paddy McDonagh, assistant secretary of Ireland’s Department of Education and Science, will present the keynote address. McDonagh will highlight Ireland’s economic achievements and discuss how they directly relate to its stellar education system.

He will share Ireland’s education plan and how Ireland’s success relates to Maine’s economic opportunities.

Cost for the event is $55 per person. Tables of eight are also available for this event at the discounted rate of $400. To register or for more information, please contact the Maine State Chamber by calling 623-4568.
