BANGOR – Police charged a Fourth Street man with criminal threatening and terrorizing after it was reported that he had threatened to blow up the police station and threatened officers with a circular saw when they went to arrest him.

Thomas Hart, 62, made several calls to the Bangor Police Department on Friday, telling them that they should go home and that they were useless, reported Detective Sgt. Jeff Millard. Then, at 4:08 p.m., Hart called the Maine State Police barracks in Orono and said he was going to implode the Bangor police station if they didn’t all punch out.

Three minutes later, Hart called Bangor police and claimed that he was going to blow up the building at 4:31 p.m. and that if they didn’t leave, they would be carrying bodies out in boxes, Millard said.

Police traced the call to Hart’s Fourth Street residence and officers John Heitmann and Steve Jordan knocked on the door. Inside, Hart revved up a circular saw and asked the officers outside, “Do you know what this is?” Jordan said.

The officers could see Hart through a window as well as hear the saw.

Hart refused to open the door for about a half-hour, until his mother came knocking, Jordan said. Hart opened the door for his frail mother, but when he saw police behind her, he started to rev the saw again, the officer said.

Heitmann moved the mother aside and grabbed the saw’s power cord, pulling it from the socket. The officers took Hart to the floor and handcuffed him.
