Achorn, Pelletier spark Husson wins

The Husson College Braves rolled to an 8-0 victory over Castleton State on Sunday and a 12-0 win over St. Joseph’s College (Vt.) on Saturday in women’s soccer action.

At Castleton, Vt. Sunday, Melissa Achorn racked up five goals and Kristin Pelletier had four assists as the Braves rolled.

Beatrice DeYeaza chipped in with three goals and an assist. Kerri Tuck added an assist and Meg Taylor stopped seven of seven shots for 6-4 Husson of Bangor.

At Rutland, Vt. Saturday, six different players scored in the Braves’ win.

Beatrice DeYeaza powered Husson with two goals and three assists. Pelletier knocked in three goals and Achorn added two more. Jess Letendre, Keira Dorr and Tuck scored one goal apiece. Katy Calligan had two assists and Taylor made one save on one shot.

Maine 1, Hofstra 1 (2OT)

At Hempstead Saturday, Hofstra’s Erin Magee converted a cross from Nicole Herzog with 3:34 remaining in the first half to tie the game and end the scoring.

Kristine Winchester made four saves on 11 shots for 3-3-2 Hofstra.

For 5-1-2 Maine, Rachel Kennedy scored on a feed from Annie Hamel. Naomi Welsh registered three saves on 14 shots.

UNE 2, Curry 1

At Biddeford Saturday, the University of New England recorded two first half goals and withstood a late charge by Curry College of Milton, Mass., en route to the win.

Camden native Shannan Hall and Krissy Forman netted the goals for the 6-4 Nor’easters. Heather Wilde assisted Hall’s score while goalie Melissa Dolbec tallied five saves.

Trinity 3, Colby 1

At Hartford, Conn., Saturday, Courtney Doyle logged a pair of goals as Trinity turned back Colby of Waterville.

For 5-2-1 Colby, Elizabeth Rice socked an unassisted score. Abby Kussell notched 9 saves on 17 shots.

USM 9, UMass-Boston 1

At Gorham, Camden native Abbie Leonard racked up three goals and an assist as the University of Southern Maine cruised to the win.

Erin Garland added two goals and an assist as the Huskies improved to 4-7-0 and ended a six-game losing streak. Molly Hagstrom, Meredith Hodgin, Jen Kelly and Tina West chipped in with a goal each while Madawaska native Jenny Boucher doled out two assists. Goalie Jamie Wood stopped one of three shots.

UM-Fort Kent 3, Thomas 2

At Fort Kent, the Bengals scored three goals in the first half and held off the Terriers in the second for the win.

Megan Foreman knocked in two goals for 2-5 UMFK. Angela Flanagan added a goal. Brandi Gagnon and Jess Gagnon each had an assist and Joy Gervais made 11 saves on 13 shots.

Katie Morrell and Sarah Hopkins scored unassisted goals for 2-9 Thomas of Waterville. Shawna Lessard and Kendra Pelow combined for 11 saves on 14 shots.

Field hockey

Southern Maine 2, Keene State 0

At Gorham Saturday, Renee Heath and Sarah MacKay tallied a goal each to lift the University of Southern Maine over Keene State of Keene, N.H.

Heath scored on a rebound and MacKay converted a pass from Aimee Sharrow. Jessie Superchi made eight saves on 11 shots for the 7-5-0 Huskies.

Trinity 3, Colby 2

At Hartford, Conn., Saturday, freshman forward Beatrice Gratry registered two goals and an assist to lead Trinity by Colby of Waterville. Gratry notched the game-winner with an unassisted goal with 13:05 remaining.

For 6-3-0 Colby, Wendy Bonner and Marcia Ingraham logged unassisted goals. Carrie Torrisi stopped eight of 12 shots.

Maine 7, Boston University 1

At Orono Saturday, Karyn Magno knocked in three goals to power the Black Bears.

Tara Bedard chipped in with two goals while Morgan Brady added three assists and matched the UMaine record for assists in a game. Kristy Ferran added a goal. Jaye Lance made eight saves on nine shots for the 5-5 Black Bears.

Meredith Long put in an unassisted goal for 4-6 BU. Susan Harrington made three saves on 10 shots.

Men’s soccer

Thomas 2, UM-Fort Kent 1

At Fort Kent Sunday, Chris Inzerillo knocked in a goal with 47 seconds left to lift the Terriers.

Ben Wheeler assisted on the game-winner. Inzerillo had an assist on a Tony Hanley score that tied the game. Ryan Thomas stopped 12 of 13 shots for 4-7 Thomas.

Neal Jandreau tallied a goal on an Aadil Mootasem assist for 5-3-1 UMFK. James Page and Zac Cote combined for three saves on five shots.

UM-Fort Kent 7, Husson 1

At Fort Kent Saturday, Gintaras Lemkutis scored two goals and added an assist for the Bengals.

Josh Roy added two goals for 5-2-1 UM-Fort Kent and Aadil Mootassem had two assists. Tim Farrar, Juan Murphy and Hatim Abouyahya each scored a goal. James Page and Zac Cote combined for eight saves on nine shots.

Peter Jellie scored on a Gus Demos assist for 0-9 Husson. Cliff Urquhart and Sean Wood combined to make eight saves on 15 shots.

Stony Brook 1, Maine 0 (OT)

At Orono Sunday, Jude Osei Bonsu scored with 16 seconds left in overtime to lift the Seawolves. Bonsu headed the ball into the goal after Kenyatta Montgomery crossed it to him. Dan Ferrin made six saves on 15 shots for 4-3-1 Stony Brook.

Mat Cosgriff made six saves on 17 shots for Maine, now 1-7.

Lasell 2, Maine Maritime 1

At Castine on Sunday, Steve Rochon scored first-half goals one minute apart, lifting Lasell College of Auburndale, Mass., to victory.

Jarod VanDerwerken made two saves on 10 shots for the 5-3 Lasers.

Joe Flagg scored for the 2-7 Mariners on an assist by Chad McDuffie. Dan Loebel made one save on eight shots.

Trinity 2, Colby 1

At Hartford, Conn., Saturday, John Klaus fired in a pass from Morgan Sandell with 3:35 to go in the second half as Trinity edged Colby of Waterville.

For 4-4-0 Colby, Jamie Yurik scored on a penalty kick. Andrew Danziger logged five saves on 11 shots.

UMass-Boston 3, So. Maine 1

At Boston Saturday, Joao Mendes scored two goals to lift UMass-Boston over the University of Southern Maine of Gorham.

For the 2-11-1 Huskies, Simeon Allolding notched an unassisted score. Jeff Gray and Dan Hills combined for five saves on 13 shots.

Curry 2, U-New England 1 (OT)

At Biddeford Saturday, Justin Makara was credited with a goal at the 6:50 mark of the first overtime as Curry of Milton, Mass., downed the University of New England.

Makara booted a long cross in front of the net that Nor’easter goalkeeper Nate Montminy unsuccessfully tried to redirect over the crossbar.

Neil Carroll recorded an unassisted goal for 0-9 UNE. Montiminy finished with seven saves.
