End the moose hunt
In this time of loss, what better way to have honored those who died on Sept. 11 than by calling off the slaughter of unsuspecting moose who peacefully graze in our state?

Change moose lottery
The state’s moose lottery was supposed to be fair, so I thought. Well, I have to thank Deirdre Fleming for enlightening me. My husband and I sent in a proposal to the Legislature which would have given everyone in the state a chance to hunt moose before they died and make money for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. I guess our idea was too simple and would have required a little computer space.
But, as it was stated in the article (BDN, Oct. 6-7), we don’t want to mess with it.
My conclusion has to be that everything my parents taught me about being fair and sharing was not true.
Being on a fixed income, we can not afford to buy people. That is what it boils down to. These people are buying other people. My understanding of a subpermittee was someone whom you wanted to hunt with. Wrong again, mom and dad.
One man said he would not be drawn for a moose permit till he was dead. He was right. He was finally drawn this year and he died before the drawing. Pretty sad.
I still have the basics for our proposal if DIFW and our Legislature would like to close that loophole and make it fair to everyone. If this was a fair process, some of the people who are not as well off or on fixed incomes would be able to afford it and save money by having killed a moose for food. I think it could be done.
I have even offered to keep track of this system. The way our program works: there are only two people in our family. One of us would be drawn and the other would not be drawn for another 5-10 years. I think that is fair. And seeing we like to hunt together we would be each other’s subpermittee and not trying to take advantage of the system. It is not a perfect proposal and would need some adjusting. I think it is better than what we have now.
The moose lottery and state lottery are about the same. The only difference is you can get depressed twice a week with the state lottery.

Tennis support sought
Tennis anyone? Does anyone remember the year Fitness East in Ellsworth closed? No tennis. No racquetball. No body builders.
It wasn’t as nice without Fitness East during the long, cold winter. No one I talked with had a nice winter! Tennis is the one and only sport that keeps you in there from 10 years old through your 90s. It is a mental, physical and aerobic sport. Most people who play tennis live a much longer and healthier life, mentally and physically.
Where are you all? Susan Sherbal made this possible to us all! Where is your support? Susan provided one of the finest facilities this side of New York. Are you blind to see this? I, for one, am very proud to be a member of Ellsworth Tennis Club. I wasn’t a happy camper after Fitness East closed. Please get your act together, support a facility which will benefit your children.
We do have a tennis club – that is if you all pull together. Will you all stop and take a look at what is available to us all. It is lovely and it is yours for a small fee. I for one take my hat off to Susan Sherbal and thank her! I will support the Ellsworth Tennis Club even if I don’t get to play as much as I would like, because of my lifestyle and travel time.
