Johnstone sparks Black Bears to win over Rams

ORONO – Jen Johnstone broke a scoreless tie with 58 seconds remaining in the first half, scoring off a penalty corner to spark the the University of Maine to a 2-0 college field hockey victory over Rhode Island on Monday.

Morgan Brady and Rebecca Ouellet assisted on the goal for the 6-5 Black Bears behind Jaye Lance, who made four saves to register her second shutout of the season. Karyn Magno scored the other goal 10 minutes into the second half off a Johnstone assist.

Danielle Dangoia made seven saves for 3-8 Rhode Island.

Bridgewater 2, So. Maine 1 (2OT)

At Bridgewater, Mass., Jill Moisuk scored her second goal of the game with 4:50 left in the second overtime, lifting the 7-5 Bears to victory.

Moisuk had tied the game with 12:39 left in the second half. Johannah Price made 10 saves on 12 shots for Bridgewater State.

Lisa Barker scored an unassisted goal for 7-6 Southern Maine. Jessie Superchi made 11 saves on 15 shots.

Women’s soccer

Drexel 2, Maine 0

At Philadelphia, the Dragons scored twice in the final 10 minutes to knock off the Black Bears.

Sandra Ackerman scored with 10 minutes to play, then set up a Christine Kasprzak tally with a minute left. Sara Peranteau made seven saves on nine shots for 4-7-1 Drexel, now 1-2-1 in America East.

Naomi Welsh made two saves and faced only five shots for UMaine, which slipped to 5-2-2 and 2-1-1, respectively.

Southern Maine 4, UNE 1

At Gorham, Abbie Leonard, Molly Tanguay, and Jen Kelley each posted a goal and an assist to spark the Huskies to victory.

Jen Young scored the other goal for 5-7 Southern Maine. Marcy Ansley made three saves on 11 shots.

Shannan Hall scored the goal for 6-5 U-New England of Biddeford. Melissa Dodge and Jayne Tarkelson combined for two saves on 11 shots.

College volleyball

Maine 3, Vermont 0

At Burlington, Vt., Maine defeated Vermont 30-11, 30-15, 30-27.

Cheryl Elliot led the 7-8 Black Bears with 33 assists, four service aces, seven digs, one block, and one kill, and Carmen Gabriel had 13 digs, 5 kills, three assists, and an ace. Claire Poliquin contributed with 12 kills and a dig while Leah Voss had 15 kills, 11 digs, and three aces. Adrienne Poplawski helped out with seven digs, three kills, and an assist.

For 1-16 Vermont, Chelsea Malloy had 18 digs, 11 kills, two assists, and a block, and Kelly O’Brien had 10 assists, two kills, one dig, and a block.
