Presque Isle ATV crash injures Mapleton man

PRESQUE ISLE – A Mapleton man was being evaluated Wednesday afternoon at a Bangor hospital after he was injured that morning in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Presque Isle.

Stuart L. Cray Jr., 19, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter from The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to Officer Chad Arrowsmith of the Presque Isle Police Department.

The officer said Cray received severe head injuries, two collapsed lungs and bruises to his head and body after his Honda ATV went over an embankment. He was not wearing a helmet.

The accident was reported at about 8:15 a.m., Arrowsmith said, after a passer-by saw the ATV and Cray lying on the ground over an embankment near the Aroostook Centre Mall driveway off Maysville Street.

Police reconstructed the accident and believe that Cray, who was alone, was trying to do a jump and may not have been fully aware of how steep the embankment was.

Arrowsmith said that after the ATV left the driveway, it was airborne for 34 feet before it dropped 11 feet.

Cray reportedly had been seen driving around the mall parking area for a while before the accident occurred. Arrowsmith said speed was believed to be a factor in the accident.

Correction: A story in Thursday’s Maine Day about a Mapleton man who was flown Wednesday from Presque Isle to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor incorrectly reported the name of the air ambulance service that was used. The flight was handled by Crown Air Ambulance.
