VASSALBORO – Husson College dominated the Maine Athletic Conference golf championship Friday by posting a tournament-record two-day total of 582 at Natanis Golf Course.

The Braves, who opened with a 295 Thursday and added a tourney-record 1-under-par 287 Friday, finished 30 strokes better than the 612 of runner-up Thomas College of Waterville. St. Joseph’s of Standish took third at 615, and the University of Maine-Farmington was fourth at 616. UM-Fort Kent and UM-Presque Isle rounded out the field.

Joe Alvarez of Husson birdied the fourth playoff hole to beat out teammate Corey Pion for medalist honors. Both finished at 1-under-par 143 along with Jim Ross of St. Joseph’s. Ross was eliminated on the first playoff hole.

Josh Vachon of Thomas shot 144 to earn MAC rookie of the year honors, and Husson’s Bruce MacGregor was named coach of the year. Alvarez, Pion, Ross, Vachon, and Andy Carleton of UMF constitute the all-conference team.

Husson’s win advances the Braves into an NAIA regional on Cape Cod next May. The winner there will advance to the national championship.
